The primary concerns of modern society in the twenty-first century newlineare focused on energy efficiency and long-term sustainability. In recent newlinedecades, the automobile industries confronted numerous challenges related to newlinethe fossil fuel energy crisis, hiking in fuel prices, environmental degradation, newlineand global warming. Almost diesel engines or compression ignition (CI) newlineengines are used in all major power-consuming sectors, such as newlinetransportation, agriculture, and electric power generation, because of their newlinethrottle-less operation and higher brake thermal efficiency, which results in a newlinerapid increase in fossil fuel consumption. The increased use of fossil fuels is newlinealso responsible for harmful emissions and their adverse consequences on newlineecological systems. Researchers are exploring several options in terms of newlinealternative fuels (i.e., biofuels) and combustion mode modifications to reduce newlinethe usage of fossil fuels, to mitigate the harmful emissions and to improve the newlineperformance of diesel engines. newlineIn this perspective, encouraging the usage of alternative oxygenated newlinebiofuels, namely biodiesel and alcohol is one of the potential approaches to newlinemeet the sustainable energy development for CI engines. Biodiesel is widely newlinerecognized as a suitable substitute for diesel fuel due to its renewable, newlineharmless, cost-effective, biodegradable nature and lower greenhouse gas newlineemissions. Another renewable fuel, alcohol is commonly used in spark newlineignition (SI) engines due to their superior octane number and ability to newlinefunction at a higher compression ratio newline
