dc.description.abstractAutobiographies are increasingly recognised as an important field of study, for newline they preserve a cultural knowledge that history books fail to grasp and convey and newlinecontribute to the timeless fabric of public memory. Autobiographies, especially those newlinewritten by women, provide valuable insights into the ways in which a self is newlinereconstructed, and popular memory is retrieved. In this thesis, particular attention has newlinebeen paid to unexplored areas. This thesis deals with the study: Women s newlineautobiographies in Odia, which have not received the attention they deserve. The newlinepresent study relates to autobiographical fragments written by women in Odia. Four newlinewomen s autobiographical writings in Odia have been identified. Relevant excerpts newlinefrom these have been selected and translated into English. The thesis covers the period newlinefrom 1920-1947, the year in which Gandhiji started the non-cooperation movement and newlinethe whole political scenario of India took a new turn, a number of women took part in newlinethe freedom struggle, and a new wave of nationalism emerged.
