Abstract: | Metamaterials have a unique, noteworthy, and useful property newlinethat cannot be obtainable in naturally available materials. This unique newlineproperty of metamaterial leads to vast improvement in many science and newlinetechnology fields. In the last decade, many investigations and designs show newlinethat the utilization of metamaterials in antennas increases the various newlineperformances of the antennas. Research in metamaterials continues to newlineupsurge rapidly in recent times in the field of electromagnetics. Microstrip newlineantennas are widely used in many applications due to simple fabrication newlineprocess, low cost and easy analysis. However, the microstrip antennas have newlineinherent limitations like narrow bandwidth and low gain. Broadband, high newlinegain and beam tilting capability of the antennas are very important in modern newlineantennas. The need for a single antenna capable of beam tilting, high gain newlineand low mutual coupling between the antenna elements for various wireless newlinecommunication applications such as 5G, Wi-Fi, WLAN has been increasing. newlineThese inherent limitations of the antennas can be overcome by integrating the newlineantennas with artificially designed materials like metamaterials. To increase newlinethe gain of the antennas having radiation perpendicular to the antenna newlinesurface, the antenna can be placed above the artificial magnetic conductor newlinesurface. To increase the gain of antennas having radiation parallel to the newlineantenna surface, antenna design needs special considerations. newlineThis thesis presents the design and development of two different types of metamaterials operating at sub 6 GHz frequency band and investigates the applicability of these metamaterials to antennas. The thesis also proposes an Electrically Coupled Split-Ring Resonator (ECSRR) based on four different shaped (triangle, elliptical, hexagon and pentagon) metamaterial unit cells with negative permeability and negative permittivity. newlineThe proposed metamaterial unit cells are integrated with a modified bow-tie newlineantenna and their performances are analyzed. The designed antenna attains a newline52% broad o |
