In axial flux machines, the flux flow in axial direction whereas in newlineradial flux machines the flux flows in radial direction. Axial flux machines newline(AFMs) are widely used as hub type motors and direct drive applications. The newlineAFM occupies lesser volume as its axial length is lesser than the diameter of newlinethe machine. The torque density of axial flux machines is higher than its newlineradial counterpart. Though the axial flux machines have several advantages newlinethan radial flux machines (RFMs), it has lamination complexity and unequal newlineairgap flux density. The axial flux machines have varying geometry along newlineradial direction. Hence it has unequal airgap flux density distribution along newlinethe radial direction. There are several types of axial flux machines among newlinewhich axial flux induction motor (AFIM) is considered in this thesis for newlinedesign and analysis. The properties like ruggedness, self-starting, less newlinemaintenance and efficient operation of induction motor enables it to be used newlinein many industrial applications. The improved performance of AFIM is verified by comparing it with its radial counterpart. The objectives of this work are given as i). One to newlineone comparison of AFIM and radial flux induction motor (RFIM) newlineii).Determination of flux and flux density distribution in various potions of newlineAFIM using multi-slice analytical approach and iii). Iii). Levelling of airgap newlineflux density in laminated AFIM through shaping of slots iv). Verification of newlineachieved airgap flux density levelling in AFIM and determined magnetic newlinecircuit parameters using multi-slice analytical approach through finite element newlineanalysis and prototype model. For the comparison of axial flux induction motor and radial flux induction motor, the design parameters and performance parameters have to newlinebe determined. The design of AFIM considering average radius of the newlinemachine is developed in this thesis. This design is similar to conventional newlinedesign procedure used for radial flux induction motor. Based on the newlineconventional design approach of AFIM, the AFIM with open type slot is newlinedes
