Diagnosis and surgical management of brachycephalic syndrome in dogs

Abstract

Brachycephalic syndrome was studied in the brachycephalic breeds of dogs presented at small animal surgery out patient unit of Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital. The study was carried out to assess the different components of the brachycephalic syndrome across the different systems effected. The prevalence of conditions related to brachycephaly in dogs was identified, assessed and documented. Diagnosis of the different components was done by history, clinical signs evaluation and diagnostic imaging by different modalities. Relevant surgery for the different conditions were carried out. The clinical improvement was evaluated post operatively. newlineCO2 laser technique was found to be the most efficient in terms of control of hemorrhage, time taken for surgery and post-operative clinical outcome. Correction of median entropion and nasal fold resection reduced the macropalpebral fissure and Lagophthalmos post operatively. Pigmentary keratitis showed arrest in progression and in two cases mild reversal.There was an overall improvement in the clinical outcome, activity, temperament and quality of life post surgically. newline
