Abstract: The thesis presents the study on Access Usage and design of digital libraries in selected self financing Engineering Colleges in Chennai . Digital Libraries emerging in the information age represent an inevitable trend for library development. A digital library contains a vast amount of digital information resources in multiple media. It may provide readers with diversified information services using digital and network technologies. Much of today s knowledge creativity is stored in digital formats. The main aim for preservation of digital documents is used for future use because it reduces space and money. For this study primary data were collected and personal interview technique was adopted to collect data for which interview schedules were prepared. Among many instruments to collect the primary data from users, the most suitable one is questionnaire. A survey method was conducted in digital library of self financing engineering college in Chennai through the questionnaires. They were distributed by the method of random sampling. It is through the questionnaires, an attempt has been made by the researcher to know the user s awareness of digital library. A pilot study was undertaken by the researcher by distributing 50 questionnaires to the respondents of various Engineering Colleges and their opinion was incorporated and thus the questionnaire was updated. 650 questionnaires were distributed to the selected respondents. The researcher has succeeded in collecting 600 filled questionnaires, on which the study has been carried out. The required data for the study were collected by a well prepared pre-tested questionnaire. Interview schedule was also adopted by the researcher to gather the required data. newline
