Abstract: | newline The international legal framework consisting of the conventions laid down by newlineILO and human rights organisations have laid down universal labour standards for the newlineupliftment of men and women at work. The focus of this Thesis is the protection of newlinewomen at work who due to procreation unfortunately face difficulties and hurdles- in newlinerespect of leave and other benefits including promotions- before and after every child newlinebirth and other associated matters. The labour standards prescribed in this regard lay newlinedown in very clear terms that there shall be no discrimination merely on the ground that newlinea woman worker has given birth to a child. These labour standards and human rights newlinedocuments clearly point to the protection of the job of woman worker by first granting newlineher paid leave and then permitting her to return to work to carry out her duties. newlineA woman at work plays an important role in the domestic progress and newlinedevelopment of every nation. Hence, it is important that maternity protection has to be newlineprovided with two major aims. Firstly, preserving the health of the mother and her new newlineborn child and secondly, this protection should aim to provide a measure of economic newlinesecurity not only for the concerned woman but also the family. This requires constant newlinerealisation by the law makers to update the law pertaining to maternity benefits and newlineprotection so that the rights of working women whose number is increasing in leaps newlineand bounds, are properly recognised and protected in the larger interest of productive newlinework and economic development. This researcher has taken up the study of impact newlinecreated by the recent amendments in the law pertaining to maternity protection which newlinehas been universally welcomed by working women as a very progressive law which newlinewill help them to fulfil their rights bereft of tension and fear.
