Abstract: The advanced networking architecture termed Software-Defined newlineNetworks (SDN) enables central control of the entire network using software newlineapplications. It consists of three planes namely, control, data, and application newlineplanes. The control plane interacts with the data plane through interfaces newlinecalled Application Programming Interface (API). It configures the forwarding newlinetables that usually include flow and group tables, at each switch. It allows newlinenetwork operators to easily manage the complete network and consistently newlineprovides the required services. Flow tables are the fundamental data structures newlinepresent in OpenFlow switches where the flow rules are stored. The term newline flow represents the set of packets with common matching fields. The newlineincoming flows are matched against the available flow rules residing in the newlineflow table. The flows are recognized and routed by the flow entry which is newlinestored in the OpenFlow switch. The match field is used to recognize and newlineidentify the flows according to the matching attributes. The appropriate newlineactions such as packet forwarding and dropping are performed based on the newlinematched rules. When there is any unmatched rule for a particular flow, the newlinerequest for a new rule in the form of a controller message from the underlying newlineswitch is directed to the controller. newlineThe flow tables are present in the well-known memory chip called newlineTernary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM). It has the unique newlinecharacteristic of performing fast routing lookups, high-speed packet newlineclassification, and high throughput. newline
