Abstract: Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) constitutes a basis for the Intelligent Transportation System. VANET can be extensively used in safety and non-safety applications. Safety applications are related to enhancement of the safety of passengers on the road. It includes receiving warning messages about emergencies from a certain distance. For example, an accident happened that involves the requirement of change of traffic to another road. Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) Safety application is an essential application in VANET, which has the primary objective of improving and enhancing safety through notification to drivers of hazards or impending accidents. Dynamic changes in topology are frequent in VANET, resulting in several jamming attacks. Hybrid jamming attacks involve a combination of the features of constant, deceptive and random jamming attacks. In this research work, a novel Index-Based Voting Approach (IBVA) has been proposed for avoiding hybrid jamming as an integral component of DSRC safety applications in VANET. This work focuses on a hybrid jamming detection strategy in terms of node centric misbehaviour detection. The authenticity of vehicular nodes was determined by a new Recursive Candidate Elimination Algorithm (RCEA). Experimental results show the requirement of the time required to make decisions in 0.3 seconds reducing decision time compared to the earlier algorithm reported in literature. The proposed IBVA algorithm in VANET improves reliability in terms of malicious node detection and reduction of decision time, which improve the network performance. The main objective of this research work is to reduce accidents on the road occurring from overtaking characteristics of vehicles in mixed traffic conditions on an undivided road. The lagging of communication between the vehicles and coordination among them during the road travelling increases road accidents.
