Abstract: Recent advancements in mobile communications, embedded systems, and sen- newlinesors lead to the design of intelligent vehicles. Such vehicles are able to establish newline newlinewireless communication among themselves, and this is called vehicular ad hoc net- newlineworks. A plethora of applications covering safety, eciency, and infotainment are newline newlinepossible through the use of vehicular networks. Enhancing safety and eciency newlineis the main goal of an intelligent transportation system (ITS). That is why it is newlinegaining much interest among the research community and automobile industries. newline newlineSafety-related messages need to propagate eciently and reliably among mov- newlineing vehicles to realize safety applications. Variable vehicle density and road topolo- newlinegies in vehicular networks raise many challenges for ecient message dissemina- newlinetion. Furthermore, vehicles must extend message awareness beyond the transmis- newlinesion range of the sending vehicles. The characteristics of vehicular networks, as newline newlinewell as the need to disseminate safety messages over a greater distance, necessitate newlineecient and reliable multi-hop communications. newline newlineThe current thesis ts into this background and aims to investigate and pro- newlinepose novel and ecient data dissemination protocols, primarily addressing safety newline newlineapplications via vehicle-to-vehicle communication. First, it provides a detailed newlineanalysis of message dissemination protocols and their classications. The thesis newlinefocuses on location-assisted message broadcasting for message dissemination tasks. newlineNative broadcasting methods result in high redundancy and channel contention. newline newlineDelay-based broadcasting techniques are ecient solutions to reduce excessive re- newlinedundancy and channel congestion. This work provides a comparative analysis of newline newlinedierent delay-based broadcast techniques. newline newlineSubsequently, an enhanced adaptive protocol design is presented that is ro- newlinebust against varying vehicle densities and road topologies.
