dc.description.abstract | newlineRoads are the major mode of transport around the globe. A road network is vital to economic development and social integration. Although there is a continuous effort to enhance road infrastructure, more awareness has to be given to keep our roads safe for all road users. It is alarming that the world loses millions of people due to road accidents every year. The young are especially vulnerable on the world s roads and road injuries are the primary cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29. Ironically, it not only oppresses the prospects of individuals and families but also burdens the nation as a whole. Furthermore, traffic accidents resulted in a loss of 3 percent Gross Domestic Product GDP in most countries according to some studies. This is cause enough for focused remedial action on this critical issue and calls for more proactive actions are on the rise universally. newlineIn India, the negligence over traffic rules of road users causes accidents and crashes. Road traffic accident results from a combination of factors comprising roads, road engineering, road users, vehicles, the environment, and the way all these interact. Maharashtra, one of the most developed states in India, has the largest road network. It has an impressive network of National Highways and Expressways. The infrastructure of National Highways is mostly managed by the National Highway Authority of India NHAI. | |
