Abstract: | ABSTRACT newlineRivers have a natural propensity to change direction, and that is a fundamental newlinephenomenon. Lateral movement of a channel, whether in a state of dynamic newlineequilibrium or in an unstable state adjusting from one equilibrium condition to newlineanother, can be generalised as a response to the flow strength and the sediment newlinesupplied to the system. The main objective of this present thesis is to measure the newlinedynamic nature of the Kulik river and also find its impact on the socio-economic newlineenvironment. The Kulik River is a trans-boundary river flowing over the Indo- newlineBangladesh Barind tract. The study shows the morphometric characteristics, newlinechannel migration scenario, sinuosity index, oxbow lake characteristics, flood newlinevulnerability, river bank erosion, land use and land cover dynamics and the effect newlineof the Kulik river on the socio-economic environment. The results show the highly newlinedynamic character of the Kulik river and it has a significant impact on the sociocultural newlinelife of the riparian people. To ensure the welfare of the people living in the newlinebasin and the surrounding environment, governments, NGOs, and local people newlineshould cooperate and work for the betterment of the riparian environment. To newlinebegin, it must be stated that any remedial or proposed action implemented in newlineisolation without a cohesive regional strategy is pointless. Thus, regional newlinepreparation for taming the rivers negative impacts in the study area is highly newlinedesirable, starting with the upper reaches and ending at the mouth of the river. newline |
