Acute Lung Injury (ALI) and its more severe form Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a clinical syndrome with a high mortality rate (27-41%). There is no effective pharmacological therapy available against ALI till date. So, the present work was undertaken to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of a traditional plant Randia dumetorum Lamk. against HCl-induced ALI in mice and unveil the key bioactive constituents possessing anti-inflammatory action by employing bioactivity-guided fractionation. The study summarized that the fruits of R. dumetorum have a potential anti-inflammatory activity against HCl-induced ALI, and oleanolic acid seems to be a major compound behind exerting such action. The glycosides/saponins might also be responsible for the anti-inflammatory action with oleanolic acid as the aglycone moiety as revealed by LC-MS-MS data and phytochemical analysis. Overall, our study demonstrates that oleanolic acid might be a suitable candidate for amelioration of acute lung injury. newline
