Abstract: | When we use the term morality in everyday language, we are usually referring to a descriptive account of social mores or personal convictions about the general kinds of behaviour in which people in a society should engage. In this descriptive sense, morality is a set of beliefs about what is good or bad, a code of conduct or a guide to behaviour that is considered to be overriding, but generally confined to a specific culture or society. It describes certain acts as offensive to the sensibilities of the general populace. newlineIn spite of many changes in the content of morality, particularly over the past century, it is clear that even in a pluralist society such as ours (which displays a vast range of moral points of view), there are some values that are shared, which can provide a basis for moral judgment .These values may shift and change with passing decades, but in essence remain uncorrupted, at least in their basic form. The value of a human life, respect for others, a right to privacy, and tolerance of difference, for example, is moral values that seem to remain through shifting social upheaval, war and even massive social change. It is the interpretation and application of these basic values that shifts over time and may cause the reassessment of public law. In particular, public law has come to focus on harm as the foundation for legal action. It also delineates between public and private morality. newline newline newline |
