Abstract: | newline quotThe study was conducted to evaluate the wastewater treatment efficiency and hydraulic newlineperformance of waste stabilization pond system located in a tropical climate region, Sebeta, newlineEthiopia, (8° 54.68 N; 38° 55.72 E) in the treatment of brewery effluent. The treatment newlinesystem consists of a preliminary treatment unit, single string of ponds and a post treatment newlineunit. The system collects about 2476and#119898;and#119898;3 wastewater generated by Brewery Company each newlineday with organic loading of 1241.63 kg/ha.d. Wastewater samples were collected at the inlet newlineand outlet of each pond in five rounds and analyzed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), newlinetotal suspended solids (TSS), total ammonia nitrogen, sulfide, sulfate, nitrate nitrogen, total newlinenitrogen, turbidity, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus and newlineorthophosphate between September 2011 and June 2012. Non conservable parameters such newlineas dissolve oxygen (DO), temperature and pH were measured onsite immediately after newlinesampling using handheld portable water quality measuring instrumentation. This was done newlineto determine the efficiency of the waste stabilization pond system so that the final effluent newlinedischarged from the system to surface water comply with the Ethiopian Environmental newlineProtection Authority (EEPA) discharge standards. The results showed that except pH and newlinetemperature most of the parameters did not comply with the Ethiopian Environmental newlineProtection Authority (EEPA) standards. COD, BOD5, TSS, total nitrogen, total ammonia newlinenitrogen, sulfide, turbidity, orthophosphate, specific conductivity and total phosphorus levels newlinewere abnormally high, exceeding EEPA s red bands limits.quot newline |
