Some issues in the housing situation in Mumbai metropolitan region

Abstract

There are three essays in this thesis. First essay undertakes the evaluation of welfare newlinechanges of in-situ housing redevelopment scheme in Greater Mumbai municipal region. newlineRedevelopment scheme is aimed at old low-quality housing stock, referred as CESS newlinebuildings and slums. There is a considerable willingness among entitled beneficiaries to newlineconsume the in-kind subsidy provided by the redevelopment scheme, which involves newlineconsiderable waiting period and giving up on relocation to spacious but distant dwelling. newlineas shown in the essay, this behavior of households is in line with the benefits endowed by newlinethe scheme. The in-situ redevelopment outperforms other housing improvement channel, newlinewhich is of residential mobility to relatively spacious dwelling in peripheral parts of newlineMMR. The benefits of redevelopment schemes have associated cost in terms of price newlinedistortion through incomplete gentrification and slower decongestion of central parts of newlinethe MMR.
