Abstract: Language plays a significant role in reading (Purushothaman and Rout, 2015). Of the 10-15% of the children who will eventually drop out from school, more than 75% of them will report difficulties in learning to read (Singh, Kumari, Sinha and Rout, 2016). The simple view of reading has shown the relationship between reading and linguistic comprehension where reading comprehension is given by the product of decoding and linguistic comprehension (Hoover and Gough, 1990). newline The relationship between language, literacy and influence of different scripts on literacy has been a current topic of concern especially for a multilingual country like India with minimal work in the area (Purushothman and Rout, 2015; Kundu, Rout and Banik, 2013; Karanth 2012).
