Abstract: | Dance has been an integral part of human civilization since the beginning. The antiquity of dance itself is proved by the old texts of India. Every gharana has a series of gurus and great artists, who have contributed significantly to the development of Kathak of their gharana. For the last few years, dance, especially classical dance, seems to be feminine. Men have to go through hard efforts to make their impact in this art. Whereas in this field, especially in the field of Kathak dance, many senior male artists like Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj, Natraj Gopi Krishna,Shri Rajendra Gangani, Shri Uday Shankar etc. have made unforgettable contributions and have taken it forward at the global level. Under all the chapters of the present dissertation, an attempt has been made to explain how the continuous efforts of great male artists have decorated, embellished and brought this art to the heights of success. Studying the life time of these glorious gurus, it is proved that the first real effort to create and propagate dance art, the heritage of Indian culture, was made by these great personalities. His unique statue established a dominance of Kathak dance in the society. All of them were talented teachers as well as amazing dancers and all of them have left their mark on Kathak with the uniqueness of their dance. Due to the untiring efforts of these artists, Kathak dance has got the most important place on the world stage. Further, the male artists of 19th and 20th century have enhanced the beauty of Kathak dance style on the stage on the basis of their art skills and talent. Due to which the popularity of this dance style has increased even more among the general public. They have trained themselves under harsh conditions and established themselves not only at the dance performance level but also as dance teachers, doctorates, university heads etc. This important contribution of his in the field of Kathak dance art will always prove to be inspirational for future generations. |
