According to the World Health Organization, the postpartum period is the most critical but underappreciated period in the lives of both mothers and babies. This is a time for women to reclaim their power and take on new responsibilities. According to WHO, the period immediately following childbirth poses significant health risks to both the mother and the new-born infant. However, health care providers pay less attention to the postpartum and postnatal period than they do to pregnancy and childbirth. In developed nations, almost every woman and the new-born receive both the postpartum and postnatal care, however the frequency of the care and type varies from individual to individual widely. In accordance with World Health Organization (WHO), maternal diseases caused the loss of 19 million disability-adjusted life years in 2016. Until recently, the need for postnatal care and support in developing countries was underappreciated. newline
