Abstract: | One of the most exceptional inventions, concrete, is extensively used in construction applications due to its good mechanical properties, durability, cost efficiency and shape adaptability (Babaee and Castel, 2016). In recent years, production of concrete by construction industries has increased so rapidly, with a yearly worldwide production of approximately one cubic meter for every human on this planet. Concrete is a complex construction material, mostly prepared using following basic ingredients - cement (which act as binder), fine aggregates (sand), coarse aggregates and water. All the constituent materials required for production of concrete are naturally available on the earth (Yin et al., 2015). A reaction occurs between cement and water, forming hardened silicate compounds, which binds all of the raw materials together to produce homogenous material known as concrete. The production of cement, which is conventionally used as primary binder in production of concrete by various construction industries worldwide, leads to emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) (Al-mashhadani et al., 2018). Amongst all the greenhouse gases, it has been estimated that CO2 alone is responsible for about 65% of global warming (Aliabdo et al., 2016). In the process of production of 1.0 ton ordinary Portland cement, approximately about 1.0 ton of carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere. Overall CO2 emission credited to production of cement corresponds to about 8% of global CO2 emissions into the environment (Adak et al., 2017). newline |
