Career indecision vocational identity anxiety and gender as correlates of adolescents career beliefs

Abstract

The present study explored career indecision, vocational identity, anxiety and gender as correlates of adolescents career beliefs. Using a stratified random sampling technique, a sample consisting of 584 XI adolescents, from Government Senior Secondary Schools of Chandigarh was selected. The Instruments used were Career Beliefs Inventory (CBI; Krumboltz, 1991) (adapted and standardised by the investigator), Career indecision (CDMI; Singh, 2014), Vocational Identity Measure (Gupta, Chong and Leong, 2015) adapted and standardised by the investigator and Anxiety (GASC; Kumar, 2010) to gather data. One way ANOVA was used to compare the XI grade adolescents of arts, commerce and sciences streams. t-ratio was calculated to compare gender differences. Major findings revealed that career beliefs was found to be negative but significantly correlated with career indecision and anxiety. Furthermore, the study reported career beliefs to have positive and significant relationship with vocational identity. newlineResults also indicated that significant gender difference was found in case of career beliefs, career indecision, vocational identity and anxiety. Significant difference was also observed in career beliefs, vocational identity and anxiety of adolescents from different academic streams; whereas insignificant differences were found in case of career indecision. Vocational identity and career indecision emerged as major predictors of career beliefs. newline newline
