Effect of inquiry based learning on academic achievement scientific attitude and student engagement of VIII graders with different learning approaches

Abstract

This experimental research aimed to study the effect of inquiry based learning on academic achievement, scientific attitude and student engagement of VIII graders with different learning approaches on the sample of 157 students of 2 Govt. Model Senior Schools of Chandigarh. The investigator utilized the pre-test post-test control group design with one experimental group. The students were classified into deep learning approach and surface learning approach on the basis of scores obtained on Revised Two Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) (Biggs et al., 2001). The experimental group was taught through inquiry based learning approach and control group was taught through conventional chalk and talk method. 2x2x3 and 2x2 factorial design with repeated measure ANOVA was utilized for analyzing the data. The major findings revealed that inquiry based learning approach led to significant enhancement on academic achievement, scientific attitude and student engagement of students as compared to conventional method. Further, students with deep and surface learning approaches in experimental group performed better than students with deep and surface learning approaches in control group when exposed to inquiry based learning approach. newline
