Biometrics are automated methods of identifying a person or verifying the identity of newlinea person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristics. Biometric-based newlineauthentication is the automatic identity verification, based on individual physiological or newlinebehavioral characteristics of the human being. Since biometrics is extremely difficult to newlineforge and cannot be forgotten or stolen, biometric authentication offers a convenient, newlineaccurate, irreplaceable and high secure alternative for an individual, which makes it more newlineadvantageous over the traditional cryptography-based authentication schemes. As there newlineare a number of biometric methods for the automatic detection of human beings, retina newlinescan is being considered as the biometric identity in the research work because of a large newlinenumber of advantages over the other biometric identities. newlineSince the personal authentication now-a-days has become a vital problem in gaining newlineentry to any work place, at the same time, detection of any abnormality present in the newlinerecognized identity is also of serious concern and to be taken into consideration and this newlineis what we have taken care of in our research work, i.e., to say, the work is bi-functional, newlinein order words to say, the research work undertaken is recognition plus disease or newlineabnormality detection. In this juncture, the retina of the human eye is being selected for newlinebiometric recognition of a human being. The retinal recognition is performed for newlineidentifying the person which is followed by retinal abnormality detection for the detection newlineof disease (diabetic retinopathy / diabetic maculopathy) using different techniques. The newlineentire research work is carried out in 2 phases, phase-1 being the retinal recognition of newlinehumans and phase-2 being the abnormality (disease) detection in the recognized retina of newlinethe humans. newlineIn this context, a large number of research papers were collected from various sources newlinein the chosen field, studied at length and breadth, the research problem was being finally newlinedefined as An Ima
