dc.description.abstractThe present investigation entitled Intraspecific hybridization for newlinedeciphering inheritance pattern in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) was carried newlineout at College of Horticulture, Anantharajupeta, Dr. YSR Horticultural newlineUniversity, Andhra Pradesh from Rabi, 2020-21 to Rabi, 2021-22. The newlineexperiment consisted of 6 lines (SEL-1, SEL-2, SEL-3, SEL-4, SEL-5 and newlineSEL-6), 3 testers (SEL-7, SEL-8 and SEL-9) along with two checks i.e., Kundan newlineand Arka Siri and 18 direct single crosses were developed through line x tester newlinemating design. The crosses, along with parents and checks were evaluated in a newlinerandomized block design with three replications for heterosis, combining ability newlineand magnitude of gene action. The top performers for yield, quality and shelf-life newlinewere taken forward to the next generations and subjected to generation mean newlineanalysis (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations) to study the inheritance pattern newlineof yield, quality and shelf-life attributes in muskmelon. Identified molecular newlinemarkers were validated against the promising lines for shelf-life. newlineThe per se performance revealed, high significant differences for all the newlinetraits among the parents. Among the crosses, SEL-4 x SEL-9 (C12), newlineSEL-3 x SEL-8 (C8), SEL-3 x SEL-9 (C9), SEL-4 x SEL-8 (C11) and SEL-3 x newlineSEL-7 (C7) were the top five performers concerning yield per vine. For shelf-life, newlinefruit firmness, physiological loss in weight, polygalacturonase and pectin methyl newlineesterase, SEL-3 x SEL-8 (C8) and SEL-3 x SEL-7 (C7) were promising hybrids. newlineHence, these two crosses were further promoted for the development of F2, BC1 newlineand BC2 generations. newlineSignificant heterosis over mid-parent was expressed in a desirable newlinedirection for most of the characters.
