Tourism development and administration a comparative study of public and private sector in Haryana

Abstract

The aim of this Ph.D. thesis entitled Tourism development and administration: A comparative study of the public and private sector in Haryana was to compare the public and private sectors in Haryana tourism development. From the literature, it was found that previous studies rarely covered the tourism development and administration aspect, and the public and private sector comparison in Haryana. To bridge this gap, the present study examines the tourism development and administration across the 4A s of tourism (Accommodation, Accessibility, Attractions, and Amenities) in the public and private sector, and also the community participation in Haryana tourism. The findings revealed that in the overall comparison the private sector performed better than the public sector, while both the public and private sectors were equally good in some of the attributes, there were other attributes in which both or either one of them needed to improve. In terms of the local community, it was found that the local community was aware of the tourism potential of the region, and the benefits that tourism brought, however, the involvement of the local community in tourism development plans was negligible. The findings of the present study may be shared with the Haryana tourism departments which will help them in understanding the shortcomings. The study was the first of its kind where the public and private sector comparison has been done in the tourism industry. Therefore, it provided a foundation for future research on the public and private sector comparison in tourism development and administration. newline
