Women of any nation are the mirror to its civilization. If women enjoy good status it shows that the society has reached a high level. In Tamil society the status of women has changed from time to time. The position of women community has been a fluctuating subject since the early ages. In the Ancient period women in Tamilnadu enjoyed equal status with men. During the Sangam Age women were given good training in literature, music and drama. In this period women were held high esteem. Further, in Medieval Period the status of women was deteriorated because of lack of education, invasion of the foreigners, political instability and the emergence of caste system compelled women to accept more undesirable dictates to women in order to protect their chastity. In the Modern Period British captured India and brought with them a different economy and culture which made a profound impact upon the position of women in Tamilnadu. As a result women got many rights and began to take part in activities outside the home. newline
