Abstract: A field experiment was conducted on Evaluation of promising genotypes of vetiver newline[Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.)] for yield and essential oil content in the Botanical Garden, newlineDepartment of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Horticultural College and Research Institute, newlineTamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore during 2016-2018. The study was aimed at newlineevaluating the promising vetiver genotypes and for selection of superior genotypes with high newlineroot yield and essential oil. In the present study, twenty five vetiver genotypes collected from newlinedifferent sources were evaluated to ascertain the superior genotype. newlineThe analysis of variance for quantitative and qualitative traits were highly newlinesignificant for all the traits indicating the existence of considerable amount of variability newlineamong the genotypes tested in the present study. Per se performance of 25 vetiver newlinegenotypes revealed that the genotype Dharini recorded the highest plant height at 3, 6 and newline9 MAP, number of tillers plant-1 at 6 and 9 MAP, number of leaves plant-1 at 3, 6 and 9 MAP, newlineleaf length at 3, 6 and 9 MAP, number of nodes tiller-1 at 6 MAP, inter nodal length at 6 MAP, newlineinflorescence length, peduncle length, root length, highest root spread, number of roots plant-1, newlinenumber of roots tiller-1, fresh root weight, dry root weight, root yield plot-1, root yield hectare-1, newlineessential oil content, essential oil yield and specific gravity. newlineGulabi recorded the highest total chlorophyll at 6 MAP and root to shoot ratio newlinewhereas, CIM Vridhi recorded the highest total chlorophyll at 9 MAP. Annur Local newlineregistered the better values for number of tillers plant-1 at 3 MAP, number of spikelet newline(rachilia) and root diameter. The accession Marudhamalai Local recorded better values for newlinenumber of spikelet (rachilia), rachilia length, number of whorls panicle-1 whereas, Palani newlineLocal registered more number of panicle plant-1 at 6 MAP. Thanjavur Local and Valparai newlineLocal registered better values for number of spikelet (rachilia) while, VS 1 Thiruvali Local newlinerecorded more number of rachi
