Abstract: | newlineThe present study was carried at the Department of Vegetable Crops, newlineHorticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, newlineCoimbatore. A total number of forty okra genotypes collected from various sources were newlinescreened and evaluated for resistance to BhendiYellow Vein Mosaic Virus disease and newlineother traits under open field condition. Out of the forty genotypes, six genotypes viz., newlineAE 64, AE 66, AE 17, 14/4, 14/5 and 14/10 were found to be resistant towards Bhendi newlineYellow Vein Mosaic Virus disease. They were subjected to artificial inoculation of newlinewhitefly (Bemisia tabaci) under controlled conditions. Also, they were screened at newlinemolecular level to detect the presence/absence of viral genome using primer BYVMV newlinecoat protein specific primer. They did not produce any banding pattern confirming the newlineabsence of viral protein in these genotypes, whereas the remaining genotypes exhibited newlinebanding pattern of amplicon size ranging from 770 bp to 800 bp which confirmed the newlinepresence of viral genome. newlineAmong the 40 okra genotypes, six high yielding genotypes but susceptible newlinetowards Bhendi Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus disease were selected as lines viz., Pusa newlineSawani, Parbhani Kranti, Arka Abhay, Arka Anamika, AE 65 and 14/11 whereas, the newlineidentified resistant genotypes viz., AE 64, AE 66, AE 17, 14/4, 14/5 and 14/10 were newlineselected as testers. Crosses were made between the lines and testers in LxT mating design newlineto get thirty six cross combinations which were screened and evaluated for resistance to newlineBhendi Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus disease and other traits under open field condition newlinealong with their parents and a standard check Bhendi Hybrid CO 4. The cross newlinecombinations of Arka Anamika x AE 17 (L4 x T3), Arka Anamika x 14/10 (L4 x T6), newlineAE 65 x 14/4 (L5 x T4) and 14/11 x 14/4 (L6 x T4) were highly resistant towards Bhendi newlineYellow Vein Mosaic Virus disease and were on par with the standard check Bhendi newlineHybrid CO4. To confirm their field resistance, they were subjected to artificial newlineinoculation of whitefly |
