This thesis mainly contributes in the field of frequency regulation of Power Systems (PSs) in both traditional, distributed and restructured atmospheres to make sure steady and reliable operation. Several control structures and strategies like traditional PID along with hybrid Fuzzy PD PI (hFPD PI), PDF plus (1+PI), Fractional Order Fuzzy PID (FOFPID) and Tilted Integral Derivative (TID) controllers have been employed to Automatic Generation Control (AGC). In this regard, important intelligent soft computing techniques like Search Group Algorithm (SGA), Firefly Algorithm (FA), Moth Swarm Algorithm (MSA), modified Moth Swarm Algorithm (mMSA), Differential Evolution (DE), Adaptive Differential Evolution (ADE) and hybrid Teaching Learning Based Optimization and Pattern Search (hTLBO-PS) algorithms are proposed for AGC of an interconnected PS. newlineA SGA based PID controller is proposed, to deal with AGC of two-area with six-unit power system comprising power production units such as gas, hydro and thermal sources. The supremacy of SGA tuned PID controller is being shown using the comparative study with FA optimization method for the same test system employing ITAE as an objective function. Then the proposed approach is being applied to three unequal areas PSs. The supremacy of SGA based PID controller is projected with a comparative result over recently published FA optimized PID controller for the similar multi-area interconnected PSs. It is noticed that, for a two-area area six-unit system, with the same PID controller the ITAE value with proposed SGA is reduced by 82.1% compared to FA. The reduction in settling times in and#916;F1, and#916;F2, and#916;Ptie are found to be 51.71%, 59.66% and 43.98% less with SGA technique compared to FA technique. Similarly for 3 area thermal system, with the same PID controller the ITAE value with proposed SGA is reduced by 67% compared to FA. The reheat thermal system includes nonlinearities like Generation Rate Constraints (GRC) and Governor Dead Band (GDB).
