Abstract: Wireless communication system requires antenna with low profile, compact size, light weight, low cost and large bandwidth. It is found that microstrip antennas are the most suitable candidate which can full fill these mentioned features. Therefore, three compact planar microstrip antennas are optimally designed using microstrip inset feed technique for broadband applications. These are operated in the frequency range of 2.5 - 20 Giga hertz (GHz) at different microwave frequency. newlineDesign and investigation of all the three antenna structures present ultra-wide band, high radiation efficiency (RE) and high gain planar antennas in this thesis. A novel approach has been followed for bandwidth enhancement while maintaining gain and radiation efficiency of the planar structures in all such designs. All three different microstrip antennas are designed by considering flame retardant 4 (FR 4) substrate (and#949;r = 4.3, and#61549;r = 1, and tan and#948; = 0.025) because of its low cost and easy availability. Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio (CSTMWS) software is considered for designing and simulation of these antennas. At first, a compact ultra-wideband planar radiator (dimension: 15 and#61620; 19 and#61620; 1.6 mm3) having modified conventional circular element and a modified ground structure for multiple applications is presented. Front plane of the presented antenna is having an improved circular patch and a parasitic element of rectangular shape. Modified ground plane (MGP) is designed at the back plane of the proposed radiator. Fractional bandwidth of suggested design is [S11 lt 10 decibel (dB)] 131 % (2.5 - 12.2 GHz) achieved. Obtained peak gain of suggested design is 3.5 dB. Achieved maximum radiation efficiency of the suggested design is 73.5 %. Subsequently, a compact antenna (dimension: 20 × 20 × 1.6 mm3) is described for ultra-wideband (UWB) application. Front plane of the presented antenna is having an improved rectangular patch with additional rectangular parasitic elements. Back plane of the presented antenna consists of MGP structur
