Re Visualising the Disruptions of the Postcolonial Era from the Select Novels of Amitav Ghosh

Abstract

This research is an attempt to probe the historical events of the postcolonial newlineperiod that relates to the colonial events. The entry of the East India company with the newlinename of trade and commerce and its acquisition of natural resources sustained its newlinepower as British Raj. This event correlates with the Corporatocracy of the present newlinecentury by visualizing the disruptions of the postcolonial and colonial periods from newlinethe select novels of Amitav Ghosh. newlineChapter I, Introduction, deals with postcolonial writings in Indian writing in newlineEnglish. The postcolonial writers and the postcolonial theories related to the research newlinearea are focused. Life and works of Amitav Ghosh and the narrative techniques are newlinediscussed. The criticism and some of the reviews on the works of the author have newlinebeen enlisted as it is demanded. A brief introduction of the research has been given to newlineinitiate the pursuing chapters profoundly. newlineChapter II, titled as Abandoning Own Culture and Identity, shows how the newlineroot of culture and identity of the native people is lost by migration to an alien newlinecountry. It shows how attempts to revive time, space, culture and identity become newlinefailures. The chapter discusses the admiration towards economic benefit and the newlineforeign culture which remain the causes for the fatal journey of the characters. The newlineprotagonists and the other major and minor characters have been adequately analysed newlinewho adopt their own culture of the alien country and abandon their own culture newlinewillingly or unwillingly. The nostalgia of the people in adopting the culture and newlineseeking their own identity has been discussed. The cultureless identity of the newlinecharacters has been exemplified. The aim of this chapter is to admonish the younger newlinegeneration to adorn our own culture to create the everlasting identity. newline
