Abstract: | Investigations were carried out to screen 120 soybean genotypes for seed longevity, in newlinethe laboratory of Department of Seed Science and Technology and Department of newlineBiotechnology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. The data were analyzed newlinethrough completely randomized design along with correlation and regression, single marker newlineanalysis. newlineThe genotypes LBS and Kalitur were found to be superior in terms of longevity, as newlinethose possess black seed coat colour, lower seed index (9.25 g, 12.44 g) and higher proportion newlineof seed coat (27.54 %, 25.54 %), seed density (2.55 g/cm3, 2.33 g/cm3), lignin (2.04 mg/g, newline2.07 mg/g) and cellulose (36.20 mg/g, 38.36 mg/g), hemicellulose (19.44 mg/g, 20.59 mg/g) newlineand phenol content (6.12 mg/g, 5.63 mg/g). Thus, recorded lower mechanical damage (1.67 newline%, 2.67 %) and EC (0.27 dS/m, 0.32 dS/m). newlineThe results revealed that seed index was significantly, positively associated with newlinemechanical damage (0.75) and reduction in germination after accelerated aging (0.94). newlineWhereas, significant, negative correlation was observed between mechanical damage and newlinegermination (%) initial (-0.66) and after accelerated aging (-0.95). The germination (%) after newlineaccelerated aging had significant and positive correlation of 0.76 with initial germination (%) newlineand 0.94 in the fifth month of natural aging, on eighth month it was 0.98. Wherein, it was 0.89 newlinein the fourteenth month of natural aging. Thus, accelerated aging is nearly equal to eight newlinemonths of natural aging. Significant and negative correlation was recorded with mechanical newlinedamage and seedling vigour index I initial (-0.95) and after accelerated aging (-0.98), seedling newlinevigour index II initial (-0.94) and after accelerated aging (-0.98). Further, negative correlation newlinewas noticed between mechanical damage and lignin (-0.90), seed density (-0.94), proportion newlineof seed coat (-0.96), cellulose content (-0.65), hemicellulose content (-0.69), phenol content newline(mg/g) of seed (-0.72). Whereas, EC (dS/m) had positive correlation with mechanical damage newline(0.91). Thus, |
