Abstract: | The line × tester analysis involving ninety hybrids, thirty three parents (three newlinelines and thirty testers) and three checks including national check GHB558, commercial newlinechecks Kaveri super boss and 86 M 38 were used to assess the magnitude of heterosis newlineand combining ability with respect to grain and dry fodder yield and its component newlinetraits in pearl millet under rainfed conditions during kharif, 2019 at Regional newlineAgricultural Research Station, Vijayapur. newlineTwenty six hybrids exhibited significant positive standard heterosis over check newlineGHB 558, twelve hybrids over check Kaveri super boss and three hybrids over best newlinecheck 86 M 38 for grain yield per hectare. Two hybrids viz., ICMA 94555 × IP 17465 newline(3,770 kg/ha grain yield and 8,890 kg/ha dry fodder yield) and ICMA 94555 × IP 14522 newline(3,759 kg/ha grain yield and 9,013 kg/ha dry fodder yield) were superior for both grain newlineand dry fodder yield. newlineGeneral combining ability analysis revealed that lines, ICMB 94555 and ICMB newline02555 exhibited significant gca effects for most of the characters studied and were newlinefound to be the good combiners and among testers, IP 21452, IP 14522 and IP 8863 newlinewere having maximum gca effects for grain yield per hectare, dry fodder yield per newlinehectare and other yield component traits. IP 9645 exhibited better general combining newlineability for dry fodder yield per hectare and other yield contributing traits. In specific newlinecombining ability analysis, four hybrids viz., ICMA 94555 × IP 17465, ICMA 94555 × newlineIP 5711 and ICMA 04777 × IP 21452 were identified as the best specific combiners for newlinegrain yield per hectare and major yield components. Combining ability studies revealed newlinethat both general and specific combining ability variances were important but the newlineestimates of sca variance were higher in magnitude for all the characters indicating the newlinepredominance of non-additive gene action. |
