Abstract: | Child labour concept had its root in Great Britain where children were used as apprentice after newlinethe emergence of factory system. In United States, child labour became prominent during civil war in newline1910 (Anand, 2009). In ancient and medieval India, practice of child labour was very common. In pre- newlineindependent India, Indian Factories Act 1881, Mines Act 1901, Indian Ports Act 1931 and Children newlineAct 1933 were passed to restrict age and working hour of the children. After independence, constitution newlineof India through article 14, 15(3), 21, 23, 24, 38, 39(e), 39(f), 41, 42, 43, 45, 46 and 47 focused on newlineprevention of exploitation and protection of children. Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955, Motor newlineTransport Workers Act 1961, Apprentice Act 1961, The Beedi and Cigar Workers Act 1966, Contract newlineLabour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970, Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act 1979 and Child newlineLabour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 were enacted to protect best interest of the children newlineAccording to the recommendation of National Child Labour Policy 1987, a scheme named National newlineChild Labour Project (NCLP) was launched in 1988 by Ministry of Labour, Govt. of India.
