Abstract: Smooth muscle cell (SMC) is one of the key components of the pulmonary vessel. newlineSMC plays an important role in regulating turnover (synthesis and degradation) of newlineextracellular matrix (ECM), which plays a vital role in vascular remodeling. Persistent newlinevasoconstriction and remodeling of pulmonary arteries decreases the cross-sectional area of newlinepulmonary microvasculature and increases the vascular resistance may produce pulmonary newlinehypertension (PH). The pulmonary vascular remodeling process results marked increase in newlineECM turnover and accumulation of proteins. In this connection, an imbalance in ECM newlinesynthesis and degradation has enormous impact, which contributes to the intricacy of the newlinepathological remodeling process [Stenmark et al, 2009; Vieillard-Baron et al, 2003]. newlineSeveral types of proteases involved in ECM degradation, where matrix metalloproteinases newline(MMPs) received the prime importance newline
