Functionalization of the nanostructures has fueled the expansion of nanoscience and newlinenanotechnology through the design of smart materials with unique properties. newlineDepending on the surface modifier, nanoparticles with a wide range of functional newlineproperties and potential applications can be obtained. While simple organic groups are newlinesufficient to protect nanoparticles against agglomeration, functionalization of the newlinenanoparticles by the ionic liquids provides additional synergies to the resultants, newlinecomprising high ionic conductivity with the complied mechanical property. These newlinehybrid systems, called nanoscale hybrid ionic fluids (NHIFs), synthesized by ionically newlineor covalently grafting ionic liquid species onto surface-modified inorganic core newlinenanoparticles represent a unique class of solvent-free, single-component colloids that newlineare distinguished from conventional colloidal suspensions in a solvent (i.e., two- newlinecomponent systems). The tethered canopy and associated counter ions are equally newlineshared as the suspending medium within the cores. The hybrid nature of the newlinefundamental units (building-blocks) facilitates straightforward design and synthesis of newlinenew, stable liquids with tunable properties. newline
