dc.description.abstractnewline The exponential growth of information technology throughout 21st century and its newlinemultivariate applications have the capability to disrupt every aspect of our existing library newlinesystems. Libraries are undergoing an era of transformation today not only in its adoption newlineof technology for library management but also in functional processes, services, methods newlineand techniques for collection development, processing and dissemination of information newlineto the users. One of the larger means to achieve the same is the provision of an effective newlinereference service. Rapid transformation is noticed in the reference environment powered newlineby recent developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs). The newlineintroduction and development of Internet and its associated web technologies have newlinesignificant impact on the way libraries provide information services to their patrons and newlinethe way patrons choose to access information. Academic libraries across the world are newlinetrying to meet the needs of the academic and research community by improving their newlineservices and enhancing their resources. One of the means is the provision of an effective newlinereference service. A successful strategy to enhance exploitation of resources is to ensure newlineusers satisfaction through an efficient and effective reference service. A successful newlinestrategy to enhance effective dissemination of information to users is to implement newlinereference service. The speed and accuracy in dealing with user enquiries by reference newlinelibrarians have a great bearing on user satisfaction. This study deals with the emergent, newlineconcepts and practical usage of reference services in academic libraries across the world newlineand has tried to design and build a model referencing service framework that can be used newlineas standard for Indian University libraries.
