India has a favourable climate and soils for growing a wide variety of newlinehorticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, potato, tropical tuber crops, mushrooms, newlineornamental plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and plantation crops, covering newlinecoconut, areca-nut, cashew nut, cocoa, tea, coffee and rubber. newlineAccording to Janick (1979) Horticulture can be defined as the branch of Agriculture newlineconcerned with intensively cultivated plants directly used by people for food, for newlinemedical purpose, or for aesthetic gratification. newlineSoon after independence, India faced the challenge of providing food security newlineto million of its people. The R and D initiatives taken by the Government of India newlineresulted in the Green revolution in the late 60 s and early 70 s. However, it was only newlinein mid 80 s that the Government of India identified Horticulture Sector as a means newlineof diversification for making agriculture more profitable through efficient land use, newlineoptimum utilization of natural resources and creating skilled employment for rural newlinemasses. newline
