Women in higher education west bengal 1947 to 2011 a historical study

Abstract

I have attempted to analyze the status of women in higher newlineeducation during the British colonial period. I have analyzed the education newlinepolicy, its implication and government efforts, legislations, commissions to newlinefoster higher education among women in colonial India, particularly in newlineBengal. I have also attempted to discuss the position of women in higher newlineeducation during that period as students, as teachers and as researchers. At newlinethat time only a limited number of women could get opportunity to achieve newlinehigher education. Almost none of them could take part to decide about the newlineeducation of women as well as future life of women. Srimati Rasasundari in newlineher autobiography Amar Jiban sketched that scenario. At that time many newlinewomen had to face similar situation that of her. The then society did not newlinesupport women s higher education. Only few women could tear off the newlinebarrier and established themselves. Here mention may be made of few newlinesuccessful women like Kadambini Ganguly (1861-1923), Chandramukhi newline1Basu (1860-1944), Saraladevi Chaudhurani (1872-1945), Kamini Roy newline(1864-1933) and Lady Abala Bose (1865-1951). But most women failed to newlinemanifest themselves for different difficulties. newline
