Abstract: According to folklorist Henry Glassie, Folk art is the expression of traditional newlinesocieties...Folk art is the flower of religious societies (Glassie, 1989). Echoing his newlinephilosophy Kantha may be considered as a crafted expression of human experiences from our newlinetraditional societies. Through it, has found expression, the everyday nuances of the native newlinefolk. Horace Cahill defines Folk Art as the expression of the common people, made by newlinethem and intended for their use and enjoyment (Cahill, 1932). True to his definition these newlinequilts were born out of need- to protect from cold and were savoured while stitching by the newlinemaker during her spare time, embroidering her dreams and good wishes onto it. Kantha, newlineaccording to exponents like Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay is an example of a strange newlinecontradiction as it is made out of material that is meant to be thrown away while it is newlinelovingly transformed to objects of exquisite beauty which become heirloom possessions. newline
