Abstract: Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) has drawn increased attention from both academic and industrial communities due to its simple structure and easy implementation, compared to other control techniques. MPC stands apart from other control techniques, since MPC pre-calculates the system s behavior. The key feature of MPC control technique is effective design of the cost function. Hence, cost function decides the performance of the system. The cost function can include various constraints based on applications. Thus, a well-defined cost function ensures accurate MPC control. The conventional Model Predictive Torque Control (MPTC), generally uses two constraints such as, torque constraint and flux constraint in its cost function. newlineIn this investigation, MPC technique with different set of cost function is proposed to control PMSM with reduced ripples in flux and torque. From the fundamental, it is understood that, the torque constraint, flux constraint, switching frequency constraint and current constraints are the major constraints to be included in any cost function. By incorporating these constraints in the cost function, the effective control of PMSM is achieved. newlineIn the first stage of the work, six number of cost functions are proposed by combining these constraints. Six combinations of cost functions are as follows: Cost function (1) only with torque constraint, (2) only with current constraint, (3) by combining torque constraint and current constraint, (4) by combining current constraint and switching frequency constraint newline
