Abstract: | Chapter 1 gives an insight into radiation, its application in various fields such as technology, medicine etc., and its effect on day-to-day life. It highlights the increasing exposure of mankind to radiation especially to that of low-dose radiation by means of clinical imaging and radiation therapy. A brief description of the various methods of luminescence dosimetry is given. The role of thermoluminescence and radioluminescence in radiation measurement is explained and their use in medical dosimetry is explored. Finally, a detailed explanation on the choice of langbeinite phosphors and their properties which favor for thermo- and radio- luminescence behaviour is discussed. newlineChapter 2 provides a detailed review of literature on the various types of radiation detected and measured using langbeinite phosphors (K2Ca2(SO4)3) and the impact of different dopants on the luminescence behaviour of these phosphors is provided. newlineChapter 3 describes the materials and methods employed in the synthesis of the phosphors and the different methods employed in the physio-chemical characterization of the phosphors. newlineChapter 4 involves the study on the effect of dopant concentration (Dy3+) on the thermal, spectral, optical, structural, morphological and thermoluminescence behaviour of rare-earth doped langbeinite irradiated with x-rays. In-situ doping of the phosphors in an inclusive co-precipitation of K2Ca2(SO4)3 is described. Thermal analysis revealed the high thermal stability of the phosphors. Spectroscopic studies revealed the presence of fand#8594;f transitions. newline |
