dc.description.abstract | Emphasis on the importance of natural, alternative and eco-friendly newlinecompounds is being made due to the rising health concerns of the chemicals newlineinvolved in chemical based compounds and their detrimental consequences on newlinethe environment. Hence, resorting to non toxic, natural and eco-friendly newlinealternatives in reducing the utilization of chemical products and their induced newlinechemical toxicity is paramount and gaining considerable attention. newlineExisting therapeutic agents like nanomaterial based drugs or newlinebiomaterials like biopolymers that have been used in medical applications newlinethough possess benefits as biological agents, but have always required newlineimprovements in their physical, chemical and biological properties enabling newlinethem to be used more efficiently for several pharmacological or medical newlineapplications. Nanoparticles though find immense applications in several newlinemedical and environmental remediation processes, but their toxicity is a still newlinemajor concern in utilizing them for biological applications. Phytochemicals newlinecan thus prove to be very useful in reducing nanoparticle induced toxicity and newlineimprove their biocompatibility. newlineThe current research work focuses on the utilization of plant newlineextracts and their constituent biomolecules (phytochemicals) as reducing newlineagent in the synthesis of biocompatible iron oxide and CuO/ZnO newlinenanoparticles and as functionalizing agent in the synthesis of chitosan films newlinewith improved properties. The work involved three different phytochemical newlinebased studies. Firstly, Borassus flabellifer seed coat extract has been used as a newlinereducing agent in the synthesis of biocompatible magnetic iron oxide newlinenanoparticles and involves the study of its various biological characteristics newline | |
