Abstract: Assessed NOx and other emissions from transportation sector were 38% for the year 2010 and are predicted to rise to 49% in 2030. This shows a drastic increase in anthropogenic NOx emissions, henceforth contributing to adverse effects on human health and environmental impacts. NOx emissions react with moisture in air and results in acid rain and cause ground level ozone formation. The concentration of ground level ozone results in respiratory diseases such as Bronchitis, Asthma, lung infections and sometimes premature mortality. India emits 0.52 thousand metric tons/sq.m of NOx emissions. Diesel engines are preferred in India in various fields such as Marine, Agriculture and Telecommunication. This is because of their higher brake thermal efficiency, brake torque, ruggedness and reliability. Among different biofuels available as a replacement to diesel in a CI engine, a third generation biofuel namely wheat germ oil is effective. Government has announced targets to promote biodiesel and biofuel production for transport industry. Utilization of wheat milling industry waste into biofuel is considered as a good alternative to diesel engines. In our country, North India is one of the major wheat source. Hence, wheat germ oil is selected as a base fuel for this research study. The experiments were conducted in a single cylinder, Kirloskar make CI engine with rated power 5.2 kW and constant speed of 1500 rpm. Initially, tests were conducted with base fuels namely, diesel, wheat germ oil (WGO) and wheat germ oil biodiesel (WGO BD) to understand the performance, combustion and emission parameters. Wheat germ oil biodiesel emits more NO compared to diesel due to their higher oxygen content. newline
