Titanium alloys are widely used in the universe. This titanium alloys are metals that contain a mixture of titanium and other chemical elements. Such alloys have very high tensile strength and toughness even at extreme temperatures. Ti-6Al-4V alloy is an alpha-beta titanium alloy with a high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance and is extensively used in the aerospace applications. Unfortunately, titanium and its alloys have found little use in general engineering applications as they suffer from poor wear resistance. Protecting titanium alloys with a coating is an appropriate solution to improve its wear resistance. In general, titanium has greater affinity for oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen and hence those gases induce cracking in fusion coating processes due to high temperature and more dilution. Dilution of coating materials causes formation of intermetallic compounds in the interface in fusion coating and also titanium is highly prone to sensitization and promotes pores, pin holes and shrinkage cavities. To overcome those problems solid state surfacing is the best suitable process. Friction Surfacing (FS) is a relatively novel solid state technology which is capable of producing coatings with lesser dilution and good metallurgical bonding and FS is a potential candidate for surfacing of Titanium alloys. FS is based on the viscoplastic deformation of mechatrode (consumable rod) and metallic bonding between the coating and the substrate at high pressure and temperature. Superior quality surfacing will be obtained by FS compared to the techniques which are presently explored.
