Abstract: This study is focused on the quantity and quality of groundwater and its suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes at the Kangayam Taluk, Tirupur District, Southern India. Kangayamtaluk is located in the northeast direction of the Tirupur district with an area of 841.89 sq.km. Its geographical location extends between 10°50 24.838 and 11°6 42.035 North Latitude and 77°24 33.207 to 77°47 20.248 East Longitude. Topographically the study area is dominated by plains, with a small region covered by a hill named Sivanmalai. The Noyyal river flows through the lower part of the taluk from East to West. The area of study is based on the environmental impact on water sources like depletion of water level and deterioration of water quality. It makes the demand for the quantification of available water and also its quality for various purposes like agriculture, industries, drinking and domestic purposes. The study will give a comprehensive picture regarding geology, geomorphology and ecological developments of the major groundwater potential area. newlineRainfall and water level data were collected for the period of 10 years (2007 to 2016) from Public Works Department. The rainfall and water level was correlated for year wise represent that the rainfall has significant fluctuation during the years 2004 to 2006, 2013 to 2015 could be over drafting of groundwater for irrigational activities due to less availability of surface water. The water level has risen during 2007 to 2012, 2016 to 2017 due to sufficient availability of surface water for irrigational purpose. However, water level has shown a notable correlation and quick response to incidence of rainfall in the entire study period. For evaluating the groundwater potential zones of the study area, vertical electrical sounding was carried out in 44 locations adopting Schlumberger electrode configuration to measure apparent resistivity. newline
