Abstract: The Public Distribution System (PDS) was first initiated by the British newlineGovernment in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Second World War in 1939. Subsequently newlineit was introduced in urban and food deficit areas of the entire country. newlineThe PDS is undertaken by the government or any other public agency for newlinedistributing the essential goods and services among the people. It provides an important newlinelinkage between the producers and consumers by making available goods and services at newlinethe right place, right time, and the right price. newlineThe PDS was introduced in India with a view to ensuring the need for equal newlinedistribution of essential commodities in the country to protect the interest of the poorer newlinesection. newline
