Abstract: The Direct Current (DC) distribution in residential buildings with PV newlinesystem has found a prominent place in residential sector due to the availability of newlinewide range of electronic appliances in the market. With the conventional AC newlinedistribution system, an internal AC to DC converter is embedded in such newlineelectronic appliances. The DC power generated by solar PV generated is also newlineconverted to AC supply using DC to AC inverter in the conventional residential newlinebuildings. Hence, incorporation of DC distribution system in residential sector newlinecan alleviate multiple conversion stages and the losses associated with the newlineconversion. An efficient and refined Energy Management System (EMS) is newlinerequired to integrate the appliances with the solar PV based residential building newlinealong with battery in DC environment. newlineThe intermittent nature of PV, energy conversion losses, appliance newlinecompatibility and load dynamics possesses serious challenges to PV based DC newlinepower distribution system in residential buildings. A holistic approach has been newlineproposed in the present study to develop a new Smart Residential Building newlineEnergy Management System using IoT based Multifunction Compatible newlineRelaying System. The proposed system monitors the loads and provides newlineuninterruptible power supply with minimum energy conversion losses. It also newlineachieves the best operating load configuration and load prioritization in various newlinemodes based on the availability of energy sources. IoT based Multifunction newlineCompatible Relaying System has been embedded with Information and newlineCommunication Technology enabled Part Zone Expansion Module (PZEM), newlinesmart relays and appliance status monitoring devices. The proposed scheme has newlinebeen implemented in a residential building with DC supply located at Madurai, newlineTamil Nadu, India with 1.5 kW solar PV system. The results are compared in newlinethree scenarios. The experimental results have proved that the losses are newlineminimized by 18% by ensuring uninterrupted power supply newline
