The cost of energy is growing due to the ever-increasing global demand for energy. Electric drive systems use the most energy. Energy conservation is the most important aspect for reducing production costs. Motors and motor drives absorb 43 to 46 percent of global energy and 70 percent of total industrial energy consumption. Inefficient motors waste energy and increase maintenance costs. Motor designers have worked diligently over the years to resolve the need for better induction motor performance. The power factor of AC induction motors is an important metric for evaluating their efficiency. Power factor and efficiency improvements will result in substantial energy savings and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which are emitted by power generation stations to meet the load of these devices. newlineThis research focuses on reducing power consumption by improving the power factor and efficiency of a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). The first step in the research is to identify a power factor correction (PFC) converter which is suitable for a driving SPIM. Quality parameters such as static gain, switching losses, ripple current, and circuit compatibility are taken into account. For driving SPIM, the modified single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) has been chosen as the best power factor correction converter. The PFC modified SEPIC converter has been designed to feed a 2 Hp SPIM drive. A control scheme is proposed to achieve closed-loop control of required parameters. newline
