A cross sectional study on the association of obstructive sleepapnea and severity of coronary artery disease

Abstract

This is a cross sectional study conducted in a tertiary care hospital newlinein South India (Chennai). This study included 124 male subjects with cardiac symptoms newlinewho were posted for Coronaryangiogram. 98 subject with positive coronary angiogram newlinefindings were sub-grouped based on number of vessels involved in CAD. All the newlinepatients were administered modified Berlin s questionnaire to detect the risk for OSA. newlineAnthropometric measurements and biochemical measurements were also recorded. newlinePrevalence of OSA among CAD subjects was found to be 62.2%. A newlinesignificant positive correlation was observed between severity of OSA and severity of newlineCAD. Involvement of three vessels in CAD was significantly higher among those with newlinehigh risk for OSA. Significant difference in mean value was seen for neck newlinecircumference (p = 0.003) and percent predicted neck circumference (p = 0.002) among newlinetriple vessel disease compared to the other groupHigh prevalence of OSA among CAD patients was observed. newlinePresence of snoring and neck circumference gt 40cm were identified as important newlinepredictors of OSA. Severity of OSA implies involvement of multiple vessels in CAD. newlineHence identification of high risk for OSA has to be emphasized in clinical settings. newline
